Shinigami are people who, after they die, choose to guide lost souls to the underworld, this is often as a punishment, due to them not being able to get into heaven.
There. Thats my explanation of what a shinigami is. Think 'gurdians of death'.

Oh, also, most Shinigami were human whilst they were alive, although there are exceptions.

Name: Kasumi Maiko
Age at death: 16
Name meaning: Kasumi= mist. Maiko= Geisha in training.
Allias: Keiko , Kasumin.
Race: Shinigami, formerly human as far as she knows.
Eyes: Silver
Hair: blue-black.
Powers: Having only died a year ago, Kasumi's powers aren't that strong, although she can kick ass if nessesary. She was Phsycic in her previous life and carried that on into the next.
History: Kasumi came from a very traditional Japanese family, who didn't approve of her 'special abbilities' and as a result liked to pretend she wasn't their child, or sometimes that she didn't even esist. Her little sister was scared of her. When Kasumi was 13, she saw an Incubus murdering a young girl under the Sakura trees near her home. To prevent the teenager from revealing what she had seen, the demon removed her memory of that night, and placed a curse on her that would drain her life force over the next three years. This curse is still visible through glowing red marks on her arms. She became a shinigami to discover the truth about her past.
Personality: Because of her past, Kasumi may at times come across as secretive and somewhat mean, but underneath it all she is a very loyal and kind person, almost to much so. She doesn't open up to people much, as she is afraid of losing them. Can be sadistic at times. Turns everything into a joke, and hides her true feelings with bad puns. Likes sweets way to much to be normal. She has a strong urge to take care of other people, in spite of how they treated her.

History: Her family were very strong catholics. She was burned at the stake because well she was accused of being a witch. her father was danish hence the name.she lived in Victorian era.
Personality: Angry, Protective, Loyal, Aggressive... the norm

Kasumi sighed, and watched the cherry blossom fall into the water below her. Just another day.. she thought Gods, I hate this place
"Kasumin." said a voice from somewhere behind her "What are you doing out here? Skønhed was looking for you"
"Huh? Oh, hi Tatsumi. I was just looking at the Sakura. Aren't they pretty?" She smiled at the older shinigami.
"Cherry blossom bloom all year round here. We're very priveleged."
"Realy, Tatsumi? After all, its the fleeting nature of the blossoms that makes them beautiful" she paused "It's that way with people too"
There was silence between the two guardians of death for a while and then Tatsumi repeated "She was looking for you. You'd best get going, Skønhed is scary when she gets mad"
Kasumi sighed "I guess...but.."
"But what?"
"Nothing"
"Kasumi, you don't have to be scared anymore. I'll protect you, I promise"
"It's not me I'm scared for, Tatsumi..."
"No?"
"No. Anyway, I'd better go. See ya, Tasumin-chan!" She got up and ran off, wondering what Skønhed could possibly want.
